Neurophysiology is one of the six treatment areas in the Cortica Care Model. The goal of these therapies is to improve the brain’s electrical activity and neurotransmitter function.

What Is Neurophysiology?

Neurophysiology is the term used within the field of medicine to refer to the electrical activity in the nervous system. In the past few decades, there has been thoughtful research done using brain imaging, electrophysiology, and cognitive psychological approaches to study autism to gain a better understanding of autism spectrum disorder. The neurophysiological therapies Cortica employs are derived from these analyses and neuroscience research. Diagnostic technologies, such as electroencephalography (EEG), allow us to measure the brain's electrical patterns. Therapeutic technologies, such as magnetic stimulation, and other forms of neuromodulation, allow us to influence electrical activity in key neural networks.

Neurophysiological Treatments at Cortica

At Cortica, we use neurophysiological therapies to target the brain’s electrical patterns and neurotransmitter balance to improve the brain’s ability to engage, focus, learn, and develop over time. Neurotransmitters are chemicals within the brain that impact its electrical activity. Neurons transmit signals to one another through the release of neurotransmitters.

Based on findings from our neurophysiological testing, we develop personalized therapies that may include:

  • Nutritional supplements such as vitamins, minerals, herbs, and other natural compounds

  • Device therapies such as Transcutaneous Vagus Nerve Stimulation (tVNS), and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

  • Medications that help to correct atypical patterns of electrical firing or to help re-balance neurotransmitter levels
